A boot that fits when the horse is exercising may become too tight when a horse is standing in a stall for hours. Any uneven compression of the tendons causes swelling and some bruising, but often doesn't lead to permanent damage in and of itself. If a true tourniquet effect occurs with complete obstruction of blood supply to the tissues then tissue death (necrosis) will occur and permanent damage is done. Anything between the boot or wrap and the skin of the leg can create irritation, abrasion, inflammation, or infection when harbored next to the skin for hours at a time. When the legs sweat under the boots, the moisture and heat that builds up can allow anaerobic skin infections like scratches to manifest. Urine or feces that accumulates on the boot or wrap can cause skin irritations and infections to develop as well. So, overheating, impaired circulation, skin irritation, and infection would be the risks. If the horse was turned out wearing them, they could become caught on something and cause injury. Always remove boots or wraps as soon as a workout is over, and if possible, cold hose the legs to speed up cooling of the tendons. |
